The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) has now embarked on a accelerated program to purify well water contaminated by the Tsunami disaster. One of the major health hazards in the affected areas is the non-availability of suitable water for drinking and other domestic uses, with most of the wells in the areas been contaminated by putrefying and decaying material. Purification of this water is considered an urgent necessity in order to contain the spread of water borne diseases. A two- pronged approach has now been adopted by the ITI at this time of national disaster.As a pilot project, a group of ITI officers will visit the Ambalangoda area from January 01, 2005 and undertake the pumping out of contaminated water and carry out the purification process.

This ambitious program that has now been launched by the ITI will subsequently be extended to other affected areas depending on the resources available. Simultaneously, the ITI will distribute packets of purification chemicals to relief agencies working in the affected areas with specific instructions on how to carry out the purification. Relief workers can also be briefed if necessary. Relief agencies are requested to collect the purification chemicals from Monday 03rd January 2005, from the specially set-up ITI collection center at the ITI premises at 363, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07.
